The StartmeupHK 2021 Festival puts sustainability at the epicentre

The StartmeupHK Festival 2021, Asia’s leading startup event, concluded on 28 May after five days of enlightening discussions, featuring 808 speakers and offering 230 hours of content. Under the theme, “A Future Unlimited”, this year’s event showcased Hong Kong’s role in nurturing the next generation of entrepreneurs.

The week-long Festival offered participants an array of keynotes, panel discussions, exhibitions, investor matching opportunities, hackathons and career fairs. Topics discussed ranged from AI, fintech and healthcare, to the lesser known but booming PropTech sector.

With the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals being paramount to StartmeupHK, Environment, Social and Governance (“ESG”) remained part and parcel of this year’s discussions, with a particular emphasis played on the need to tackle sustainability not only as an environmental concept, but also a social one.

Speakers stressed the importance of collaboration, calling on entrepreneurs to develop a synergised mindset, something crucial in this day and age. Will McGoldrick, APAC Regional Managing Director at The Nature Conservancy said, “We have a much bigger impact when we collaborate with others”. McGoldrick hopes that more innovators can tackle sustainable innovations as multimodal implementations in which all actors become part of the supply chain, not just at the end of the production process but right from the beginning.

In line with Hong Kong’s Greater Bay Area (GBA) integration, the Festival underpinned the territory’s strengthened role as a bridge between Greater China and the world. Participants defined new infrastructure such as the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge as crucial, adding that proximity to the supply chain is more needed than ever.

Speaking of the Festival, Stephen Phillips, Director-General of Investment Promotion at InvestHK shared, “This year’s StartmeupHK Festival 2021 was far, far more than just a conference… It was an inspiring week bringing together some of the brightest minds behind some of the world’s most exciting startups”.

The StartmeupHK Festival 2021 was supplemented by StartmeupHK Salons, with events in key markets around the globe.
