Sotheby’s celebrates New Year with launch of Hong Kong luxury sale series

Riding on Sotheby’s record USD1 billion in luxury sales in 2021, Sotheby’s welcomes the New Year with RE(LUX), a luxury sale series that juxtaposes modernity with tradition, showcasing the season’s best luxury items through a fresh lens. Premiering in February 2022, the sale presents a curated assemblage of jewellery, watches, wines and spirits as well as handbags and sneakers to be featured across multiple sales channels, be it live, online auctions or Sotheby’s Buy Now marketplace.

The auction caters to the growing trend of cross-collecting in these categories by today’s collectors. The remixed format is a testament to the new definition of luxury and the evolving role played by auction houses in the sector. RE(LUX) previewed in Shanghai for the first time on 11-13 January 2022 before the launch of its full exhibition in Hong Kong due to take place 11-17 February 2022. Highlights include a one-of-a kind Diamond, Emerald and Sapphire Dragonfly Brooch from Van Cleef & Arpels, an exceptional set of jadeite cabochons, as well as trending gems such as Alexandrite and Paraíba Tourmaline, both of which are surging in popularity as the new eveningwear trend.

Whilst white diamonds remain amongst jewellery collectors’ favourite, Paraíba tourmalines are growing in demand, mostly as a result of their distinctive ‘neon-like blue’ colour, which strikes the eyes under all light conditions. Named after Czar Alexander II, Alexandrite is another gemstone growing in popularity. Emerald by day and ruby by night, it metamorphoses from green hue under bright day light to a reddish purple under incandescent light.
