Yew Chung College shapes the educators of tomorrow

In today’s fast evolving world, school teachers are expected to become well-rounded educators, aware of the constant changes taking place within their socio-cultural environment. Understanding the need for holistically trained early childhood educators, Yew Chung College of Early Childhood Education (YCCECE) strives to design curriculums that are not only up to date, but also predictive of future trends, from technology and digital learning to STEM and ‘Play to Learn’.

Distinguishing itself from other education institutes, YCCECE combines core elements of professional teaching with the ‘Play to Learn’ concept, one that puts cognitive skills at the forefront through the incorporation of day to day life elements within the learning process. In this day and age, adaptability remains key and the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed educators to innovate further and quickly.

As one of Hong Kong’s pioneering early childhood education centres, YCCECE is on a constant quest to refine its curriculum, this time by adding more emphasis on digital learning. Upcoming students will be given hands on experience through a 16-week Practicum and Advanced Practicum, immersing them into a real school environment where their adaptability to face the unexpected will be tested.

With its robust network, YCCECE also serves as a knowledge exchange platform, one that gathers students and experts from around the globe to share insights on trends that affect their respective communities. Through field experiences and overseas exchange trips, future educators will gain knowledge on the world’s trends so as to better respond to Hong Kong’s multicultural expectations.

Although challenging on many fronts, the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed the education sector to place creativity at the core. Despite the challenges of the pandemic combined with a decreasing number of Form Six students, in the academic year of 2020/21, YCCECE admitted nearly 400 students, and prepared them to become ECE professionals.

Enrolments for Diploma, Higher Diploma, and Bachelor in Education (Honours) in Early Childhood Education (BEdECE) are open for DSE graduates who wish to pursue a career in education, with concentrations such as Infant & Toddler Education, Special Education Needs and Early Childhood Education.
